The Vanilla plant is a fairly new commodity crop to this island nation of spices. Vanilla planifolia is the vanilla orchid of choice for cultivation in Sri Lanka and other Indian Ocean vanilla producing countries. The vanilla vines grow high into the trees if not properly maintained and must be constantly cared for, pollinated and hand picked at just the right time of maturity.

Just ordered 5 different extract grade vanilla beans for my homemade vanilla extract. They arrived on time and were extremely fresh. They will make a good variety of extract to be used in my pastries in a year, if I can wait that long. I made mostly double fold, but have one or two bottles of single and triple fold to experiment with.
