Using Spices & Other Edible Ingredients For Health

Recently, a bunch of our products were featured over on Eye & Pen, where Brandon Elijah Scott discussed his affinity toward natural remedies over artificially derived pharmaceuticals. We couldn’t agree more.

I’m not saying we are better off without the advancements that have been made through Western medicine. It has been essential to the successful treatment of many individuals worldwide. That said, if you could heal your body and mind naturally, avoiding artificial intervention, why wouldn’t you? When it comes to my family and myself, herbal medicine will always be tried first.

Here are a few edible ingredients that can be used as natural remedies:

How to Use Cinnamon in Herbal Medicine

After the short-lived, yet widespread teenage fad of ‘taking the cinnamon challenge’, we are all aware of the negative impact cinnamon can have when consumed in mass quantities. You see, the bulk of cinnamon found in supermarkets is of the cassia variety, which has high levels of coumarin. Studies have shown that coumarin can cause liver damage and toxicity. This is not the case with all cinnamon, however. Ceylon cinnamon only contains trace amounts of coumarin—about 250 times less than its cassia counterpart. Plus, it is thought to have a ton of healing properties as follows:

  • It can help diabetics control their blood glucose levels.
  • It is loaded with antioxidants.
  • It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • It may improve memory function.

Nutritional Benefits of Morel Mushrooms

Morels, like most other mushrooms, are filled with a multitude of nutritional benefits. Among these are rich amounts of selenium, copper, potassium, antioxidants, and vitamin—what a tasty way to supplement the vitamin that an estimated three-quarters of the population is short on. Morels also have minimal calories and loads of fiber, so you can feel great about incorporating them into your diet more often! Additionally, they are believed to help in detoxifying and protecting against liver damage and drug side-effects. What's not to like about that?!

What are the Healing Properties of Saffron

Saffron may be the world’s most expensive spice, but it’s not too extreme when you consider along with the incredible color and unmatched flavor it adds to your dishes, you are also getting a wide array of bonus healing properties. We took a deeper look at some of the benefits of using saffron for health in a past blog post but in summary, saffron has long been used as a natural way to fight, maintain, and/or avoid diabetes, decrease inflammation, boost immunity, and provide relief for pain.

How can Vanilla Bean Be Used as a Natural Remedy

This incredible bean is capable of much more than the calming effect the scent has on our bodies and minds. Oil derived from the vanilla bean is believed to ease depression, balance hormones, and fight free-radicals. Many folks use it to promote healthy skin and hair and to decrease the aesthetic signs of aging. Oh yeah, and it can be a powerful aphrodisiac. It’s no wonder this bean is known for producing the most recognizable aroma in the world.
